WASHINGTON, DC—July 18, 2014— Official Sports International partners with DC Stoddert to support the educational training development of adult and youth referees.
Over the past three decades, Official Sports International has been a great contributor to the growth of soccer in the United States. Through its support of the U.S. Soccer Federation and the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (“NISOA”), Official Sports International has become a nationally-recognized brand that invests locally and provides incentive for referees and soccer officials to look and feel professional the minute they step onto the field.
From Grassroots to Grasstops
In youth sport today, “fun” is an important goal of coaches, players, parents and spectators. It takes chemistry, communication and patience to build a sporting environment that encourages children to actively engage in the fundamentals of the game, and to learn the rules of the sport as they progress. Soccer is a game that can be played without many obstacles but it does have a basic set of rules that are set in place in order to maintain order, impartiality and structure. The person(s) who enforce those rules are required to undergo formal training and study as mandated by the U.S. Soccer Federation, the national governing body of the sport in the United States, in order to become a licensed referee.
According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, there are more than 140,000 licensed referees today and that number continues to grow on a daily basis. DC Stoddert Soccer and Official Sports International are proud to announce a new partnership that will provide more dedicated support to the identification, training and placement of new referees in DC Stoddert Soccer’s recreational program.
“Joining forces with OSI has been one of my goals since I joined the Stoddert Nation,” said Douglas Homer, DC Stoddert’s Executive Director. OSI will become the club’s Official Partner for Referee Education and Training and also support the club’s ongoing efforts to match newly-trained referees with experienced officials through an expanded mentorship program. “By working directly with our Referee Director and friends at Metro DC-Virginia State Referee Program, we firmly believe that OSI will help us create new pathways to success for male and female referees here in the greater Washington, DC community.”
“We are proud to support DC Stoddert's referee program and help further their commitment to soccer referee development,”, said Marilou Tobin, Co-Founder of Official Sports International. “Official Sports' mission is to support all levels of referees with quality apparel and equipment, on and off the field, so that referees can focus on the game. DC Stoddert's dedication to enriching the community through the sport of soccer is an inspiration."
Utilizing its broad collection of custom-designed referee products and apparel, Official Sports will provide support for all DC Stoddert-affiliated referees, and help to sustain the club's ongoing commitment to fostering new relationships in areas of the city where soccer has traditionally lagged behind other sports.
“Partnering with Official Sports is a great move,” said Walt Anderson, who serves as the Director of Referees for the Washington, DC-based youth club. “OSI offers the high quality referee uniforms and gear that our DC Stoddert referees need. Their support of our referee training program will be very helpful",” said Anderson.
