Winter Indoor Training Off to a Great Start At Wilson High School
by Len Oliver, DC Stoddert Soccer Director of Coaching
DC Stoddert Soccer Director of Coaching Len Oliver and seasoned travel coach Thom Heath put 15 coaches through their paces on Sunday, January 10 at the Wilson High School Gym. Now in its 10th year, the coaching series will run through January and February 28 at Wilson High School, 3850 Chesapeake St. NW, and with a different theme each week. Len and Thom invite all open coaches to attend the free clinics, promising a mix of fitness and technical exercises, along with soccer games that teach and the usual "Coaches' Game." As one coach commented: "This is just what I need to get ready for my team in the spring."
On Sunday, January 10, for example, Len took the coaches through a series of warmup exercises to be used with their players, followed by sample exercises from teaching dribbling, passing, heading, receiving, and shooting. Small-sided games will always be a feature of the Sunday training sessions, as they teach the game with players able to experience many touches on the ball.
Future sessions will focus more in depth on each technical area, the small-sided games, and team tactics:
- Sunday, January 17: “Passing for Penetration/Possession”
- Sunday, January 24: “Games to Teach Dribbling”
- Sunday, January 31: “Shooting/Crossing/Finishing”
- Sunday, February 7: “Attacking Principles in Action”
- Sunday, February 14: “Defensive Tactics—Individual to Group”
- Sunday, February 21: “Effective Small-Sided Games”
- Sunday, February 28: “Soccer Games That Teach”
ALL OPEN COACHES INVITED!
