Onward and Upward!
Four boys' travel teams move up to higher NCSL division for Fall '09

DC Stoddert’s travel soccer players were on a roll spring season. Four boys’ teams placed among the top three in their division and will advance to the next-higher level in the National Capital Soccer League. (NCSL) Two girls’ teams came in second in their divisions and should move up, too.

Congratulations to the U11 Blue Metros, which tied for the NCSL Division 3 championship and will move up to Division 2 this fall; to the U12 Blue United, which move up to Division 4, U14 Red Dragons, which move up to Div. 5, and U15 Rockets, which under DCST’s 2008 Travel Coach of the Year Mohan Telfer, have climbed for the fifth straight season from Div. 6 to tie for first place in NCSL Division 3 this spring and will play in Division 2 this fall. There they might face the U15 Blue Lightning, one of two top scoring teams in Division 2 with 19 goals; the team tied the third-place team in points, but finished fourth.

DC Stoddert Soccer’s girls teams had equally robust records in the Washington Area Girls Soccer League (WAGS). The GU16 Heat, coached by former George Washington University varsity standout Andre Russo, scored 15 goals and sustained just one loss to finish second in WAGS Div. 3. The U15 Force also scored 15 goals--among the highest in the division--to snag second place in Div. 3. (The Force also were the Virginia state champions in the US Youth Soccer’s President’s Cup tournament in May and advanced to play in the Mid-Atlantic regionals in this month.)

Other teams had strong seasons as well. The GU15 Impact, in 4th place in Div. 5, missed tying for second place by one game; the GU12 Blue Metros will remain in Div. 1 and the GU12 Metros came in third in Div. 5J.

All told, DC Stoddert fields 17 boys U9-U19 teams in NCSL, with two teams in every age bracket except U19, U17 and U12. Some 13 girls U9-U16 travel teams compete in WAGS; all but one age bracket--U13--has two DCST teams. Our travel teams also compete in MSI Classic and Old Dominion Soccer League.
