For most spectators, sports is about winning. But the scoreboard doesn’t begin to reflect our coaches’ commitment to developing the accomplished, ethical and occasionally dazzling young DC Stoddert athletes who play soccer every weekend in spring and fall.
Mohan Telfer, DC Stoddert Soccer’s 2008 Travel Coach of the Year, whose U15 Rockets have advanced from NCSL Div. 5 to Div. 2 in three seasons, is just such a coach. On May 20, insurance giant Liberty Mutual welcomed Mohan along with 40 other youth coaches into its 2009 Responsible Coaching Winners’ Circle. The award, which celebrates individuals in each state for being "an integral part of the fabric of our communities and are key to instilling in our children the lessons learned from sports, both on and off the field," couldn’t be more deserved.
As Mohan wrote the jury: "My aim is to provide a fun environment for the development of soccer and life skills. Soccer has taught me important lessons about the value of hard work and perseverance and my aim is to transmit these lessons to young players. Both of my parents are teachers and two of my siblings have also been teachers. I am a soccer fanatic who was raised by two wonderful lifelong educators. I believe that coaching soccer is a natural step in my life and I hope that my efforts will continue to be a positive influence in the lives of my players. "
Congratulations, Coach Mohan! And kudos to the Rockets; the team tied for NCSL Division 3 champions this spring, and advance to Division 2 for Fall '09.)
