Girls Developmental Program Summer Camp Information

Dear DCSSL Coaches, Managers and Parents,

People have been asking about Girls Developmental Program Camp weeks, so I wanted to get those dates out so everyone can finish planning their summers.  Please feel free to forward to interested families.

The GDP Camp is a full-day, 9am-4pm camp for girls, with a heavy skills and small-sided game emphasis in the morning, tournament play in the afternoon, followed by swimming at the end of the day.  Players must be accompanied by an adult for check-in in the morning and check-out prior to leaving each day.

The GDP Camp is a crucial camp for skill development and club building, as all players are there for the same reason, to improve their levels of play.  It is not a child care camp.  It is an extension of the club, with all participants being DCSSL club players, primarily travel players, with enthusiastic, highly qualified and responsible coaches and counselors, with counselors being current players in the club.

All players have returned to their teams with much higher levels of skill, creativity, and ability to apply skills in game situations, and have shown dramatically increased understanding of the game. The sessions will offer lots of player development in a fun and challenging learning environment.

All coaches are USSF and/or Coerver Coaching certified, highly credentialed, experienced, and highly respected in their field, and all have the club's philosophy on player development.

All players (intermediate and travel) who are eager to learn and improve are welcome!

Please note that the the weeks of camp are spaced apart.  I am highly recommending that players NOT attend back to back weeks of camp over the summer to prevent overuse injuries, which we are seeing more and more of at earlier ages.

Below is the registration information for GDP Camp.  Please do send your materials to reserve your child's spot.  And, please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards, Karen Kelser

As most of you know, in addition to my work in Stoddert, I am also a Regional Director for COERVER® COACHING of Virginia.  Many of our DC kids attend camp with Coerver for pre-season skill development, which will again have a close location for camp, and will be a great fall pre-season camp.

Coerver Camp is co-ed, with all levels of players (from the little mites to ODP level players).  For travel players, many DC and other players come for 1/2 day with us, then train with their teams in the evenings, which is the schedule that I encourage for the GDP and DC travel kids.  For rec kids, it is a terrific way to get ahead of the competition in preparation for the fall season.

The closest local Coerver Camp is held in Arlington, just over Chain Bridge at Williamsburg MS, 3600 N. Williamsburg Blvd., Arlington, VA 22207.

There is one local week of COERVER® CAMP:

Dates: August 21-25

Location: Williamsburg Middle School,  just over Chain Bridge

(3600 N. Harrison St., Arlington, VA 22207)

Registration and details: after March 1 at:

Karen Kelser, Director and Head Coach

Karen Kelser holds the USSF National A License and Re-Certification, the USSF National Youth License, and the KNVB Youth Coaching Diploma. She is a VYSA Coaching Education Instructor for USSF State Licensing and directs DCSSL's Girls' Developmental Program during the seasons and off-seasons, and is a Regional Director for Coerver Coaching. She played NCAA Div. I soccer at GWU and has head coached at Marymount University, ODP, girls' and boys' travel teams, and at all school levels.

Khaled Hamami, Assistant Coach

Khaled Hamami holds a USSF National C Coaching License, the USSF National Youth License, and the NSCAA Goalkeeping Diploma. Khaled coaches the DCSSL Goalkeeping Clinics for DCSSL travel players, the girls' U9 and U10 GDP and the GU14 DCSSL Tempest travel team. He also is the Assistant Director of the Duperier Soccer School and Camps in Reston. He was on the National Youth Team of Yemen and played for Al-Wahda Professional Team in Sanaa.

Karen and Khaled have taken both my girls from absolute soccer neophytes to top level travel players, maintaining a wonderful balance between skill development and fun, and always encouraging them to do their absolute best as individuals by maintaining a positive outlook with high expectations.  She is always developmentally-appropriate and extremely knowledgeable about when the brains and bodies of young girls are ready for the next step up in intensity and skill development."  Cindy Dunbar, DC Stoddert GDP Manager and WAGS Rep., GDP U9-10 and Travel Parent

Karen spends a lot of time developing the player's skill and sense of moving without the ball, and being in a position to support teammates. Since any player spends most of the game without the ball, this is a critical skill that most clinics ignore. Her patience and enthusiasm for teaching are inexhaustible. Bill Garcia, DCSSL Girls Travel Commissioner and Travel Parent

My team was trained by Karen Kelser. I saw tremendous growth in their passing abilities, ball control and ability to see the game. Karen is not only a great coach, but is encouraging, positive and fun. Michele Cole, Nationally Licensed Coach, VYS Travel Team

My daughter's ball handling skills increased dramatically as a result of Karen's excellent coaching. Perhaps most important for players this age, Karen is able to pass on the technical aspects of the game while making it fun. Cathy Rost, U9-10 GDP and DCSSL Travel Soccer Parent
