Consent Items The Board approved the minutes of the November 8, 2006 and December 6, 2006 meetings, as distributed on January 10, 2007. II. Election of Officers In accordance with the by-laws, the Board unanimously approved the following slate of officers to serve for calendar year 2007: Chairman: Dave Repka Vice Chairman: David Sarley Treasurer: Bob Hartheimer Secretary: Jennifer Hillman III. Discussion Items Committee Structure Dave Repka noted that under the revised structure for the Stoddert Board, for the time being there would not be an Executive Committee. All meetings would be held at the Board level. There will continue to be the following committees: Open Committeeto address all issues affecting open/recreational games, including coaching, rules and disciplinary actions, schedules, and rostering Fields and Equipmentto address all issues pertaining to the permitting, maintenance, set up and assignment of fields and the purchase and distribution of all equipment, including goals and uniforms Open Training and Coach Development Committeeto address all issues pertaining to the support and training of open coaches, including coaching licenses, clinics for coaches, and resources such as a the coaches bulletin and website help Scholarship and Outreachto make decisions about scholarship for individual travel players and to establish policies regarding both travel and open scholarships, to reach out to interested kids outside of Northwest Washington and its neighboring suburbs Travelto address all issues related to travel soccer, including coaching, rostering, tryouts, field allocations and loading, travel season budgets, collection of season fees External Affairsto work to secure better access to better fields and to improve Stodderts footprint in the community Dave Repka proposed that the league also create a Referee Committee that would be charged with overseeing the recruiting, training, and assignment of referees, including the parent/volunteer referee program. It was agreed that the traditional rules and discipline functions will remain with the Open Committee. The Committee will be chaired by Mitch Dubenskey, and will include Bill Garcia, Allistair Gellatly, as well as number of the senior referees. In terms of the Open Committee, Allistair stated that he could no longer serve as the chair of the committee. Greg Robb agreed to assume the chairmanship of the committee. Legal/Insurance Issues Dave Repka noted that the work to ensure that all of Stodderts policies are up to date is nearing completion. Administrators Report Tom Gross briefed the Board on a personnel performance matter. After discussing the matter, the Board decided on a course of action in an executive session. Outreach Efforts Dave Repka briefed the Board on the opportunity to hire on a part time basis (12-15 hours per week) an intern with substantial relevant experience to: 1) help put together the 30th anniversary events, 2) update and improve the leagues website to make it more user friendly; and 3) develop and implement communications and outreach strategies. Committee Reports 30th Anniversary The gala is tentatively scheduled for September 30th at Cindy Dunbars house; the kids Soccerfest will be in May and the league may hold an end-of-the-season pool party at Jelleff following the last games in June. Strategic Planning Retreat The leagues strategic planning retreat will be held on Saturday, February 4th. All Board members and commissioners are encouraged to talk with their coaches and parents to get input on what the league can be doing to better run its Open soccer program. The plan is to come away from the strategic planning retreat with a sense of the hot topics for the league and a plan to address them. Fields Charlie reported that he had received a letter from Sidwell Friends School suggesting that Stoddert would not be granted permission to use their field this spring. There is a possibility that the league could rent field space at Georgetown for at least the number of slots necessary to fill out our need for full-sized fields. He noted that Palisades is off-line, but that we will have Shepherd and Carter Baron North this spring. In terms of the projects for turfed fields, the proposal at UDC is currently dormant, so the earliest that the UDC field could be finished would be for the fall season. We remain in contact with Deal Junior High School regarding the possibility of improvements there in exchange for a use agreement. VII. Goals for Girls Dave Repka briefed the Board on the opportunity to contribute funds to support the work of DC Blast and Ian Oliver and others at Stoddert to put in place a soccer program for girls in sub-Saharan Africa to help combat HIV/AIDS. The Board unanimously agreed to create a link from our website to the Goals for Girls website to encourage any interested Stoddert families to contribute to the effort.
