Northeast champions will vie for U.S. national title this summer
CITY FC U19 BOYS CLINCH NORTHEAST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
After winning the Maryland Futsal State Cup in January, City FC Boys U19 Rangers won the US Futsal Northeast Regional Championship in Wildwood, NJ, on February 21. And what a nail-biter it was!
The team - eight players and two coaches from 10 different countries! - embarked on a (very windy) four-hour drive to New Jersey on the morning of Saturday, February 19. In the first round, City FC Rangers won 9-4 against Real Maryland, 7-0 against BNC Bethesda Revolution and 4-3 against Century United on Sunday, finishing first in their group. On Monday, City FC Rangers faced a strong Evolution team in the semifinal. In a very tactical and tense game, Rangers won 4-2 to qualify for the final verse LSTS Futsal, which took place 2 hours later.
The first half of the final was again very tactical, as both teams were trying to keep possession and find an opening. City FC fell behind 0-1, and then 1-2 at half time. After tying the game (2-2), City FC committed a 5th foul in the half, which meant all fouls were 10-yard penalty kicks from then on (LSTS Futsal would miss one and City FC goalkeeper saved another one). Rangers scored 3 minutes before the end of regulation time, but LSTS Futsal tied the game in the last minute. During the two 5-minute overtime periods, Rangers were up 4-3, but LSTS scored again. Rangers scored the decisive goal 26 seconds before the final whistle (and penalty kicks).
Similar to the State Cup, the team finished 5 games with 5 wins, 29 goals scored, and only 13 allowed: a fantastic record! After a celebratory trip to the team’s favorite local cheesesteak eatery they returned home to DC. Next up, the National Championship to take place this summer.
